Rivertown Brewing Company Taps New Beer

New beer celebrates the award-wining
Whiskey Shambles and their music
CINCINNATI, OH – July 20, 2015: Many blues songs have been inspired (or at least influenced) by alcohol, but it’s rare that a libation has been inspired by a blues band. Rivertown Brewing Company‘s new “Shamble On – Dubbel Barrel Blues,” is a Belgian dubbel fermented with whiskey-infused wood chips, and brewed in honor of Cincinnati’s own award-winning blues quartet, The Whiskey Shambles.

After the success of “Shambling Southward,” a beer that The Shambles collaborated on with Rivertown last fall, both parties agreed that they wanted to brew another special beer for this summer, and throw another party for its release.
Like Shambling Southward, the recipe for Shamble On was developed by pilot brewer Rob Westendorf, the mind behind Rivertown’s very popular Jenneke Belgian Blond Ale. Rob and his wife Roxanne (Rivertown’s Beer Evangelist) collaborated with Brother James — the band’s resident beer geek — for several months to come up with a new recipe that captures the band’s unique sound and spirit in liquid form.

Roxanne explains this unique beer: “We modified the previous recipe — which was based on a rich Belgian Trappist Dubbel — and added whiskey-infused wood chips to the secondary fermentation stage, to make a beer that is inviting, but as bold as The Whiskey Shambles.”
“We’ve always described The Shambles sound as a loud, belligerent style of demonic hill-stomp blues that almost . . . but not quite . . . betrays an air of subtle sophistication lingering just around the edges,” states Brother James. “This brew combines an exciting wallop from the whiskey with the gentler refinement of the Belgian style, making it a perfect pairing with the band: an even more potent blast of what we’re calling, ‘Dubbel Barrel Blues’.”

About THE WHISKEY SHAMBLES:
The Whiskey Shambles are an original garage rock/basement blues band from Cincinnati, OH, formed in 2012 by Nathan Singer, of Starshaker and Absinthium fame, and Brother James, founder of the Cincinnati Entertainment Award-winning blues band Voodoo Puppet. Their sound has been compared to Screaming Jay Hawkins, The Black Keys, The Heavy, Gary Clark Jr., Black Diamond Heavies, and The White Stripes. They have been described as, “R.L. Burnside and Black Sabbath jamming with Nina Simone in a burned-out rum shack, using opium for incense.”
The Shambles won the 2014 Northeast Ohio Blues Challenge, and were chosen to represent Northeast Ohio at the 2015 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. The band headlined two showcases at the 2015 Millennium Music Conference near Philadelphia. They were also invited to showcase at the 2015 Singer-Songwriter of Cape May conference in southern New Jersey, and the 2015 NXNE conference in Toronto. In addition to winning the 2015 Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Best Blues Act (for which they were also nominated in 2014), they were nominated for CityBeat magazine’s Best of Cincinnati (Best Original Band) in 2014 and 2015, and several of their song releases have earned critical acclaim.
Charlie Harmon of Cincinnati Magazine stated, “The Shambles have a chain-gang grip on the down-and-dirty heavy garage blues, with gritty vocals about the dark side of soul and fuzz-laden guitar that drives deep into the gut.” CincyVibe magazine declared them “The dirtiest darkest gritty garage band in town.” The French music magazine, Blues & Co. named their CD “Loose Change for a Broken Man” the best of the trimester, describing it as “A magnificent album of modern hill country blues, in the steps of the one and only Screaming Jay Hawkins; a music that will give real pleasure to the bold and audacious — and the people who, like me, long for a rejuvenation of the blues!” And Brian Baker of CityBeat said, “While Loose Change exudes a contemporary vibe, the album bears the diverse hallmarks of the best ‘70s Blues Rock albums. Like Led Zeppelin, Cream and Free before them, The Whiskey Shambles channels first generation Blues subsets like Delta, Piedmont and Hill Country, combined with the members’ unique individual experiences to conjure an edgy, atmospheric vision of 21st century Blues.”
In 2012 The Whiskey Shambles released the EP, “ONE LAST BLAST: Live at Mad Frog.” September 2014 saw the release of a second live EP, “Stumbling Toward Beale Street.” Their first LP “Loose Change for a Broken Man” was released in November 2014, was shortly thereafter named #23 of the Top 89 Albums of 2014 by WNKU, and is getting regular airplay on college and AAA radio stations. The Shambles are already working on their second full-length album in the studio, during the summer of 2015.
